Critical Facts About Senior Citizens and Music

From a Free Senior Solutions Article (Use your back button to return)
There have been a lot of studies conducted on the influence of music. In the elderly people, music has been shown to not only reduce tension and anxiety but also helps reduce the feeling of isolation and solitude. And a surprising revelation of this study was that the subjects enrolled for this study showed an increased production of human growth hormone, which has a positive effect on the side effects of aging like wrinkling, osteoporosis, general aches and pains and even sexual function. Health practitioners can draw an important inference from this study. It shows that group activity and interaction with others is important for staying healthy and having a better standard of living. It proves the long held belief that music is a means to link with our higher selves and thereby help us lead a healthy life that can be enjoyed to the fullest.
Most people do not realize that a large percentage of retired seniors suffer from some form of depression, especially those who are widowed.

There are many reasons for this but the end result is the same. They tend to become less active and to stay at home while their world closes in around them. We come from a different era and the world we know no longer exists. It is easy for them to come to a point where they feel that they are not needed and no one cares.

Television is no longer entertaining because so much of the broadcast content is repulsive. There is profanity and lack of dignity. There are too many commercials and they are loud and offensive.

Radio no longer broadcasts the kind of music that seniors like to hear.

Most seniors have very little opportunity for any kind of social interaction.  They need an enjoyable way to make new friends.

Music, especially that which the seniors enjoyed when they were younger, is very therapeutic. It promotes a relaxing and refreshing peace of mind. It brings happiness.

Senior dances promote exercise, relaxation and interaction. They give senior adults something to enjoy and look forward to.

Senior friends have told us on numerous occasions that the enjoyment and exercise they experienced at our dances was keeping them alive.

As seniors, none of us get enough exercise and anything we can do to encourage it is very important.
